The Time of Christ
Prelude to Christ
W hile the philosophies of the Order of Nehor swept through Lamanite territory—where it had all too much success in turning their hearts from God in the century before Christ—the four sons of king Mosiah, Ammon, Aaron, Omner and Himni, had more than just a little success in reintroducing them to the God of their fathers and his son, Jesus Christ. Lehi and Nephi, the two sons of Helaman, also went about doing missionary work, and through their teachings and accompanying trials, succeeded in converting thousands of Lamanites (see Helaman 5:19). During one episode, the conversion of three hundred led to the conversion of thousands more. While it began with the Lamanites casting the Lehi and Nephi into prison, the outcome of their imprisonment was far different than the Lamanites first intended. The Lord encircled Lehi and Nephi with fire to prevent the Lamanites from harming them. As a further deterrent, the earth shook and a dark mist appeared. And then, as if in a whisper, the Lord spoke .
And it came to pass that there came a voice as if it were above the cloud of darkness, saying: Repent ye, repent ye, and seek no more to destroy my servants whom I have sent unto you to declare good tidings.
And it came to pass when they heard this voice, and beheld that it was not a voice of thunder, neither was it a voice of a great tumultuous noise, but behold, it was a still voice of perfect mildness, as if it had been a whisper, and it did pierce even to the very soul. (Helaman 5:29–30)
After calling them to repentance, the voice of the Lord called again, instructing them that the time was at hand for the Lord of hosts to walk among men—Christianity and a new age of enlightenment was about to come forth.
And behold the voice came again, saying: Repent ye, repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand; and seek no more to destroy my servants. And it came to pass that the earth shook again, and the walls trembled. (Helaman 5:32)
As their call to repentance continued, the Lamanites saw Lehi and Nephi in the midst of the swirling fires speaking with angels. Then, as a grand finale:
And it came to pass that when they cast their eyes about, and saw that the cloud of darkness was dispersed from overshadowing them, behold, they saw that they were encircled about, yea every soul, by a pillar of fire.
And Nephi and Lehi were in the midst of them; yea, they were encircled about; yea, they were as if in the midst of a flaming fire, yet it did harm them not, neither did it take hold upon the walls of the prison; and they were filled with that joy which is unspeakable and full of glory.
And behold, the Holy Spirit of God did come down from heaven, and did enter into their hearts, and they were filled as if with fire, and they could speak forth marvelous words.
